Damask Mod Podge Frame

My favorite pattern ever is damask so when I saw some gorgeous damask wrapping paper in black and white at Michael's a few months ago, I snapped it up thinking I would use it to spruce up the fronts of the drawers on our ugly old dresser when I paint it. I still plan to do that but as it will take longer than ten minutes (which is the most Annalise ever entertains herself) it has not happened yet. Annalise's little friend Olivia turned one the other day though and I knew just the gift for her. I pulled out the wrapping paper, some black paint, mod podge, and a $1.00 unfinished wood frame from Michael's, as well as some much-loved old pants that I had saved for their fabric. I wore these to all the church dances back in the day. :)

The best part was that I didn't have to buy anything- I already had all of it around the house! This is what I came up with.

For the flower, I cut circles out of the pant leg and held the edges over a candle flame until they melted and curled upwards. Then I attached them with a pearl brad and hot-glued them to the frame.

Perfect for a sweet one-year-old girl!

  21. Great idea!
How funny to think that the pants melted though. :P

  22. I thought it was funny that the pants melted too! I actually wasn't sure whether they would or not! They were 95% polyester, so I guess that's what did it!

I just used plain office paper for the paper I printed on. It worked perfectly!

  28. Hello I am trying to make the flowers and mine are not melting and curling up.... lol they are burning. Any suggestions?

  29. You're right - Perfect! I'd forgotten all about the burning silk flower trick. Used to do that when I worked in a craft store.

Love the frame. I'm loving anything black & white and damask is quickly growing on me!

Would love for you to drop by this weekend and link up to Passion for Paint.

  30. The first thing is to make sure the fabric has an element in it that will melt (for instance, cotton wouldn't of course). I'm not sure which fabrics do other than polyester and chiffon; those are the ones I've used. The other thing is to make sure you don't ever let the fabric get close enough that it touches the flame. To melt it, hold it about an inch from the flame and wait a minute- even the stuff that melts will burn if you let it touch the fire. Hope this helps!

  32. Jessica,
I love your idea and plan to make a few for my girlfriends for Christmas. Any suggestions or helpful hints for getting the paper smooth on the frame when you modge podge? Thanks!

    ReplyDelete
  33. The main things that have worked best for me are to apply a VERY thin layer of the Mod Podge to the frame and then once the paper is placed on top of it, sit with it for a few minutes, manually smoothing it out with your finger tips and squishing the bubbles. I've heard that using a brayer for this helps too, but I've never tried that. Then let it mostly dry before putting the layer of Mod Podge over the top. It will never be perfectly smooth because wrapping paper is so thin, but I guarantee no one will notice and they will love it! :)

  35. OK, I tried modgepodging this frame and it looks like crap. What's the trick to pressing out the bubbles and not getting ridges?!

  41. Hi Jessica, I absolutely LOVE this frame! I am new to crafting and I tried to do this, but it turned out looking completely terrible. Could you possibly tell me what kind of paint you used to paint the frame initially? Did you paint the whole frame or just the edges? Also - I had a lot of trouble trimming the paper... did you use a razor? If anyone else has answers to my questions as well, I'd appreciate it. Thank you for the wonderful blog! You have some really great ideas :)

  42. H Katy! I used the super-cheap accrylic paint in those little bottles (for like a buck at Michaels) to paint the edges, and didn't paint underneath the paper at all. I made one exactly the same way in this tutorial:

    http://craftily-ever-after.blogspot.com/2010/11/christmas-present-frame.html

    Hope that helps! :)

  43. you are brilliant my darling! I say that for your choice in pants as well as the frame. haha :) I just got mod podge for the first time the other day and am afraid of wasting it, but I want to use it. It says that after you put it on you have to seal it, but then it says it is it's own sealer...?! Do you have to put anything on top of it to keep it from being tacky?

    Thanks a zillion,

    Kim
